How you can help

Mary Thompson Fund is run entirely by volunteers. We welcome people who share our values and have a little time that they can give to support people seeking asylum and refugees who have settled in our area.

If you are interested to become involved, we ask that you complete and submit our Volunteer application form. We ask that you are sensitive to the needs of vulnerable people and will treat them with kindness and compassion.  It will help if you are a good communicator with people who speak English as a second language and please respect the confidentiality of their circumstances! Never be judgmental or ask what has happened to them - revisiting trauma can be a painful experience.  (You will receive guidance and we will ask that you read our policies).

There are many ways that you can help us and they don’t necessarily involve a regular commitment. For example, from time to time we need people who can:

  • Help at our monthly ‘Drop-ins’ where our clients receive regular emergency payments.
  • Be on hand to provide transport and accompany our clients if they are called to an appointment with a hospital, solicitor or the Home Office.
  • Be available to deal with one off needs that won’t occur often like collecting children from school, moving furniture or assisting with filling forms.
  • Help with our fundraising events

Some of our supporters cannot give their time, but donate financially, which is crucial for our ongoing work and is much appreciated.

Do ask to be included on our mailing list and we will keep in touch!

If you have any other skills that you think may be helpful to us, please just let us know.

Thank you for your interest.
